God Has Breasts and Is Not Omnipotent

The bible never says that God is omnipotent or that he created out of nothing…

We get our modern ideas of Gods omnipotence from the Hebrew name El-Shaddai wich is most often translated as “the almighty” but many scholars today suggest that God of the two mountains or the large breasted one would be a more accurate translation. So El-Shaddai speaks of Gods all love or nurturing rather than his all power.

Gods omnipotence then, is wrapped up in Gods maleness. Just as we state that God is unchanging because, God having emotions and being moved (by compassion or as Marcus Borg translates it Gods wombishness) is equated with female traits.

As we shed our notions of omnipotence and perhaps also ex nihilo we may re discover the sacred feminine and maybe restore women as imago dei.

The above quote comes from Patrik Olterman who submitted this note in the comment section of Rachel Held Evans’ contentious post about God’s omnipotence. I happen to be in complete concordance with Olterman here 🙂
