In my view, the worst thing that has happened in higher education was slicing everything up into academic disciplines…academic disciplines don’t think, scholarship is not an intellectual activity. Our universities have become anti-intellectual, they socialize people to think that the world of thought is not useful…to put it in more proper terms, [in a university] you are socialized into thinking the way an economist is supposed to think, or the way a relativity physicist is supposed to think, and I happen to think that both of them think wrongly…So I don’t think about what I’m doing as trans-disciplinary. I would just like to get rid of that word “discipline.” I’d prefer to just think.
