Jacqueline Casey began working at MIT in 1955 and was assigned to produce summer session materials for the university. The posters that Jacqueline designed there would become legendary. She was born in Quincy, Mass., on April 20, 1927, and received a certificate in fashion design and illustration and a bachelor of fine arts degree from the Massachusetts College of Art in 1949. She then worked in fashion illustration, advertising, interior decorating and trade publications before joining MIT’s office of design services.
Her work was a blend of Swiss cleanness and Italian imagination. Her co-workers would say that her humor and playfulness added the final dimension which elevated her design from being good to being great. Casey was able to bring the playfulness of her organic beautiful design to MIT which is primarily known for teaching and research in science and technology. Surprisingly, her work fit in extremely well. Most of the posters she designed announced art events at MIT, but she also designed posters that announced other events like scientific lectures and academic programs, all of which displayed her engaging and playful imagination.
RIT has an extensive online collection of Jacqueline Casey’s posters here. Enjoy!
