John Cobb on the worst thing that has happened to higher education

5644435563_7cc656fae2_bIn my view, the worst thing that has happened in higher education was slicing everything up into academic disciplines…academic disciplines don’t think, scholarship is not an intellectual activity. Our universities have become anti-intellectual, they socialize people to think that the world of thought is not useful…to put it in more proper terms, [in a university] you are socialized into thinking the way an economist is supposed to think, or the way a relativity physicist is supposed to think, and I happen to think that both of them think wrongly…So I don’t think about what I’m doing as trans-disciplinary. I would just like to get rid of that word “discipline.” I’d prefer to just think.

The above is a transcribed excerpt from a recent Homebrewed Christianity interview with John Cobb and Catherine Keller.
